The business was founded in 1946 as T. McDiarmid of Werris Creek, N.S.W as a painting, sign-writing and monumental inscription business by Thomas McDiarmid, after he had left the Navy & Armed Forces as a craftsman and artist. The business thrived and when his eldest son John James McDiarmid and John’s wife Dawn McDiarmid joined, it evolved to contracting to firms such as Pioneer Concrete, Gibbs & Jukes, Wills Brothers and Stanley Johnson.
From an early age, John had always shown an interest in his father’s business and soon became a very skilled draughtsman and stonemason. When Tom retired, John, along with his own sons Darryl McDiarmid and John McDiarmid Jr. (Grandsons of the founder) continued operating the business, trading as John J. McDiarmid & Sons, which it continues to this day.
